The Mattes formed Sundown in the South in 2010. Currently, most of the funding for their rescue efforts comes from an educational petting zoo that began at the turn of the century (2000) they operate called Zoo-Zoom. They are a non-profit organization hoping to attract funding from other sources to keep the education portion of what they do going.

"There is so much more we could do out in the community, " said Brett Matte. "We could do site visits, group lectures, company picnics. People love it when we come to them and teach them new things about wild animals. If we had more help, we could even make this sanctuary visitor friendly."
